What “freedom” actually looks like for a fit pro

Hi,

A lot of fit pros tell me they got into this industry for “freedom.”

Freedom of time.
Freedom of income.
Freedom to do work that actually matters.

But somewhere along the way, that word got hijacked.

Freedom started to look like:

  • working less without changing anything underneath
  • posting content instead of building a business
  • chasing flexibility without stability

And when real life doesn’t match that picture, it’s easy to assume freedom just isn’t realistic in fitness.

Here’s the truth most people don’t say clearly enough:

Real freedom for a fit pro isn’t about escaping responsibility.

It’s about control.

Control of your time — so work doesn’t spill into every hour.
Control of your income — so one slow month doesn’t create panic.
Control of your energy — so coaching doesn’t drain the thing you love most.

Freedom isn’t doing whatever you want, whenever you want.

It’s knowing your business can support your life — instead of constantly demanding more from it.

The fit pros who stay in the industry long-term aren’t lucky.
And they’re not necessarily the most talented.

They’ve just built their businesses deliberately.

Not fast.
Not flashy.
But in a way that gives them choices.

That’s the version of freedom I care about helping fit pros find.

Over the next few emails, I’ll start unpacking what actually creates that kind of freedom — and why it has far less to do with hustle or hacks than most people think.

For now, I want you to sit with this question:

What would freedom actually mean for you — if it was built on stability instead of stress?

There’s a type of client every PT has had. They start strong. Show up on time.Follow the plan.Say all the right things. You think: “This is going to be a great one.” Then a few weeks pass… They cancel a session. Then another. Then they’re “away this week.” Then… Nothing. No complaint. No awkward conversation. No refund request. They just quietly disappear. And most PTs tell themselves the same thing: “They lost motivation.” It sounds reasonable. Even comforting. Because it puts the problem on...

A PT told me last week: “I had 7 enquiries… but only signed 2.” He said it like it was normal. So I asked: “What happened to the other 5?” There was a bit of a pause. Then: “Not sure really… a couple said they’d think about it.” “One went quiet.” “Think one just wasn’t ready.” — That’s how most of us lose clients. Not dramatically. No one slams the door. No one says, “this isn’t for me.” They just… drift. — And because it’s quiet, it gets ignored. You move on. Post more. Hope the next batch...

Two PTs work out of the same gym. Same equipment. Same membership price. Same local area. One is fully booked. The other is posting every day… and still has gaps in their diary. The second PT isn’t lazy. They’re doing what they’ve been told: Posting consistently Trying to “add value” Staying visible Maybe even throwing in a few reels they don’t really enjoy making. From the outside, it looks like they’re doing everything right. But when someone actually messages and asks: “Do you have...
