Your best marketing is already training with you

Hi Reader,

Think about your best members.

Not the ones who pay the most. The ones who turn up, work hard and love being there.

How many of them came because a friend brought them?

In 25 years in fitness, the best new members have nearly always come the same way: a happy member telling a friend.

Yet most gyms and studios leave referrals to chance. Or they put up a poster offering a free month, and wonder why nothing happens.

Why most referral programs fall flat

  • They’re a poster, not a habit
  • They lead with the reward, when most members refer friends to help them
  • They ask at the wrong time, before the member has seen results
  • Nobody says thank you, so it rarely happens twice

What works instead

Ask one member at a time, just after a win. Give them something easy to pass on, like a guest pass.

Thank every referral. And look after the friend as well as you look after your members.

I’ve put it all into a free 16-page playbook:

  • When to ask, and exactly what to say
  • A guest pass, a rewards card and thank-you templates to copy
  • Local partners and bring-a-friend sessions
  • What one referral is really worth to you
  • A 30-day launch plan, and a cheat sheet to pin up for your coaches

With Halloween just gone, I was reminded of one of my most popular boot camp sessions.

Members brought partners, children and colleagues, everyone brought a pumpkin as their equipment, and people donated to a local charity instead of paying.

It raised money for a good cause, showed people what the camps were really like, and got local media coverage. It’s in the playbook, with how to run your own.

Hit reply and tell me how you thank members for referrals now. I read every reply.

Andrew

P.S. Start with page 4. It shows what one new member is really worth, and it might change how generous you’re willing to be with your thank-yous.

Just structure that compounds. With 20+ years in the industry — from PT to building a 6-location bootcamp business — I’ve learned that growth comes from systems, not more effort. Hi Reader, January is the biggest month of the year for most gyms and studios. It’s also the month most owners plan last. By the time they sit down to it, it’s mid-December, everyone’s busy, and January becomes a discount and a “new year, new you” post. So I’ve put together a free kit to get January sorted now, while there’s still time. No resolutions. Just progress. Most January marketing promises a new you. People have heard it before, and most resolutions are gone by February. This...

There’s a type of client every PT has had. They start strong. Show up on time.Follow the plan.Say all the right things. You think: “This is going to be a great one.” Then a few weeks pass… They cancel a session. Then another. Then they’re “away this week.” Then… Nothing. No complaint. No awkward conversation. No refund request. They just quietly disappear. And most PTs tell themselves the same thing: “They lost motivation.” It sounds reasonable. Even comforting. Because it puts the problem on...

A PT told me last week: “I had 7 enquiries… but only signed 2.” He said it like it was normal. So I asked: “What happened to the other 5?” There was a bit of a pause. Then: “Not sure really… a couple said they’d think about it.” “One went quiet.” “Think one just wasn’t ready.” — That’s how most of us lose clients. Not dramatically. No one slams the door. No one says, “this isn’t for me.” They just… drift. — And because it’s quiet, it gets ignored. You move on. Post more. Hope the next batch...
